GDC Travelouge ‘09 – Prolouge

Two days left until I leave for the Game Developers Conference. I’ll be trying my best to post daily reports here, but I can’t make any promises. I’ll be working the conference this year, which means I have to be there early every day (As opposed to late starts and Jack-in-the-box prep sessions) which ultimately means I’ll need more sleep during after conference hours. It’s all good though, I’m looking forward to the experience and getting to meet new people within the industry. Just means the travelouge won’t be as indepth or possibly as punctual as I would like it to be. Hoping I’ll have lots to say. For instance, I didn’t receive the email that said I would be unable to work Hideo Kojima’s keynote session, which I was said I would if that wasn’t possible. That’s exciting.

Resident Evil 5 is now upon us, but I don’t have the money for that. Instead, I’ve been spending my time with Retro Game Challenge. All in all, I think it’s the safest decision.

This is where I normally would make the claim that Retro Game Challenge was created specifically for me in some pretentious fashion while I try to pretend I’m some kind of miserable old gaming fart when in reality I’m only in my twenty-somethings. Even then it’d still be a misleading claim, since the game era represented by Retro Game Challenge starts when I was just old enough to learn that paste doesn’t really have any nutritional value. No, the game is more geared at inspiring the nostalgia of the actual senior citizens of gaming. You know, 30 or older.

Still, I wasn’t too far off from this era to not be able to appreciate it or feel somewhat nostalgic myself. The five games of Retro Game Challenge, complete with fictionalized histories (which you can read about in the equally fictionalized 80s style magazines you get in the game) dating from late 86 into early 88, complete their presentation with manuals, cheats, and a nerdy little kid who watches you play while telling you about the pro gamer he’s been reading about or the latest thing a friend of his told him about in the game that may or may not be true.

Noting that, it’s kind of funny how the game’s nonsensical premise pulls you in as well. The idea is that some crazed game show host has turned you into a kid, teleported you to the late 80s and forces you to play video games with him. It’s not longer after that you realize exactly how he got to be so… eccentric, as the little companion of yours is kind of a douchebag. He treats his mom like crap, continually makes fun of you  when you disagree with him and doesn’t seem to have much interest other than staring at the TV 24/7 regardless if he’s the one playing or not. In short, how a lot of us were back then! Parody or not, it’s seriously not to off from how I remember playing games with my playground buddies  during the later periods of the actual NES era, and I here tell that the sequel will let either him or a real friend jump in for actual multiplayer fun.

I don’t consider this a review of the game (Honestly I wouldn’t even know where to start), but I do think of it as a shining endorsement for you to go purchase the game. Because if you don’t, the sequel won’t come out, and then where will I be?

I know this is a video game blog…

… but I agree with everything this man has to say about the Watchmen movie.

If I thought he’d read it, I’d say someone needs to actually send Mountain man this letter.
